John Adams -(1991) The Death of Klinghoffer

Death, be not proud! Apparently John Adams’s The Death of Klinghoffer has something to offend everyone. When it was new back in 1991, this quintessential opera, based on the 1985 hijacking of the cruise ship Achille Lauro by Palestinian terrorists, created a mild stir among those who perceived it as insufficiently hard on terrorism and more than a bit unfriendly to Jews. Since 9/11, the smoldering resentment has fairly exploded. The Boston Symphony hastily canceled a performance of concert excerpts. Musicologist Richard Taruskin, in an article in the New York Times, accused Adams of romanticizing terrorists and being un-American. The editor of England’s Opera magazine was appalled by Alice Goodman’s libretto, which he dismissed as “desperately naïve,” and even went so far as to say that the opera is “best left unperformed.” After seeing a production in Helsinki, one critic in the same journal hated the work so much that he declared it “an operatic corpse.”

John Adams - (2006) The Dharma at Big Sur / My Father Knew Charles Ives

A child of America's east coast, who now makes his home on its west, the prolific John Adams reflects that journey in these two autobiographical works. My Father Knew Charles Ives looks back to the New England of Adams's youth. His father did not, of course, know Ives, but that composer's influence is evident in Adams's evocation of his New England youth. Written for the opening of Frank Gehry's Disney Hall in LA, The Dharma at Big Sur thrillingly fuses sitar and jazz with Appalachian fiddle riffs, brilliantly played by Tracy Silverman, with the BBC Symphony conducted by the composer. Nevertheless, the ambience of each piece is so different that it made sense for Nonesuch to package this as a two-disc set―even though the program would fit comfortably on one―for any more direct collision between East Coast and West would have been truly disorienting.

Composer's Notes
I was looking at the ceiling and then I saw the sky was a quote from a survivor of the 1994 Northridge earthquake, a catastrophe that devastated a large part of the northern Los Angeles area. The librettist June Jordan found this phrase in the Los Angeles Times and offered it to me as the title for what I wanted to be a Broadway-style show. After composing two grand operas, “Nixon in China” and “The Death of Klinghoffer,” I’d realized that the only truly indigenous form of American musical thater was what we call, for lack of a more precise term, the “musical.” My first appearance onstage as a child was in a small-town production of Rogers and Hammerstein’s “South Pacific”, with my mother acting the role of Bloody Mary. In my youth I knew all the famous American shows more or less by heart, and my later discovery of “West Side Story” convinced me that this particular theatrical form could actually attain the level of genuine art. Another American icon, Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess”, also stood as a model although as a theaterical entity it had serious formal problems.

John Adams & Steve Reich - (1985) Grand Pianola Music / Vermont Counterpoint

Grand Pianola Music (1982) is scored for a small orchestra of winds, percussion, sopranos, and two pianos, and has a light-hearted, humorous, and, at times, sharply parodistic edge. The work is something akin to a musical ex¬orcism: In it John Adams has brought together a variety of elements from his musical past, including the marches and band music he played in his youth, a touch of Gospel, some Beethovenian piano writing-and even a patently diatonic theme that is reworked until it becomes an archetypal minimalist figure. Steve Reich’s Vermont Counterpoint, dedicated to Betty Freeman, is scored for three alto flutes, three flutes, and three piccolos, plus two solo lines in each of which the soloist plays, one at a time, all three instruments. For this recording, Ransom Wilson taped all nine ensemble parts plus one solo line, and then added the "live" solo line as the final touch.

John Adams - (1987) The Chairman Dances

Combining the vocabulary of classical dance with a suggestion of traditional Chinese lyric gestures and pageantry, The Chairman Dances builds on the repetitiveness of its minimalist score and boldly colorful staging. It features a lead dancer and a corps of 16 women attired in brilliantly colored Chinese-style costumes, with decor by Rouben Ter-Arutunian. The ballet was inspired by a scene originally written for, but not included in, the production of Adams' opera, Nixon in China, that of Chairman Mao dancing with his future bride, the movie star Chiang Ch'ing.

John Adams - (1988) Nixon in China

There just hasn't been an opera of this intelligence or this sophistication written anywhere in the last half-century. Adams and Goodman make a thrilling and effective equation between what opera and political summits both do in their different ways: make the quotidian seem "larger than life" (to quote Nixon from his opening aria). There's much to say about the technical sophistication of the work: the dense and rewarding allusiveness of Goodman's beautiful libretto, for example, or the wonderful ways in which Adams uses the repetitiveness of the minimalist mode for psychological purposes (such as Nixon's nervousness, Pat's near-hysteria, and Madame Mao's violent dogmatism). This production is quite fine, and enjoys a definitive Nixon in the person of James Maddalena, who makes the character by turns triumphant, clumsy, paranoid, tender, and poignant―just as we remember the real Richard Nixon. There are few more beautifully pillowy baritones than Sanford Sylvan, and he found the part of his career in Chou En-lai, the subtle and valiant Chinese premier: Chou's splendid first-act aria "Ladies and Gentlemen, Comrades and Friends" is the emotional heart of the opera, and Sylvan does it full justice. Carolann Page is a moving and heroic Pat Nixon, and does a superlative job with Pat's big scene in the second act (the most enigmatic but also touching part of the entire opera―in part because it moves towards the margins of the masculine political world elsewhere portrayed).

John Adams - (1998) Gnarly Buttons & John's Book of Alleged Dances

Цитата:
John Adams becomes more popular by the year with his compositions for large orchestra (Naive and Sentimental Music, On the Transmigration of Souls) and operas (Doctor Atomic and in a way El Nino) gaining justly increased performances, but Adams has another side―chamber works. As with all great composers it is the smaller, exposed works that often tell us more about a composer's genius. The two works on this splendid recording prove this to be the case. John's Book of Alleged Dances was written for the Kronos Quartet and is a bit of whimsy in its series of eleven dances for string quartet and a rhythm track made of prepared piano sounds. The result is a group of works that pay homage to the backwoods simplicity of America's folktunes. The dances are endlessly creative, with never a moment of hurried compositional thought. They are played with such fine sense of fun and expertise by the Kronos Quartet that they become instant staples in the chamber repertoire. Gnarly Buttons could be called a clarinet concerto, but that title does not fully cover the novelty of the work. Composed for clarinet, banjo, guitar, mandolin, trombone, English horn, bassoon, piano, strings, and 'two samplers' playing a variety of sounds including accordion and cow! The piece is dizzy, playful, funky, fun and virtuosic! Adams conducts the London Sinfonietta and the Present Music ensemble with clarinetist Michael Collins in this rollicking performance that feels like a ride through the farmlands and backcountry of America.

John Adams - (2001) El Nino

Sung in English, Spanish, and Latin, this warm and sometimes moving oratorio humanizes the Nativity by emphasizing Mary's perspective and the miracle of birth. Based on a variety of sources, including the New Testament Apocrypha and contemporary Latin American poetry, El Niño begins with the steady repetition of a D minor chord, followed by the introduction of polyrhythms and dissonance, as well as countertenors Brian Cummings and Dan Brubeck. Both of them, as well as the third countertenor, Steven Rickards, give golden performances on this album. Particular kudos, however, must go to the three principals: Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, mezzo-soprano; Dawn Upshaw, soprano; and Willard White, baritone. Even though there are moments when White's baritone threatens to dominate, they aren't significant enough to forestall any pleasure in the overall work.

John Adams - (2004) Road Movies

Nominated for the 2005 Grammy Award for "Best Chamber Music Performance", Road Movies offers a portrait of John Adams at different stages of his career. His best-known compositions are musical statements made on a grand scale. The pieces selected for this disc, however, were written for one or two instruments, but by no means are they "small" works―there's plenty of the Adams style and substance. "China Gates" and "Phrygian Gates", both for solo piano, date back to the very beginning of his professional life in 1977. They bear the mark of youthful exuberance and are excellent examples of his compositional language in the early stages of development. The later works have the type of harmonic and melodic movement that Adams is known for, which Adams describes as traveling music, and indeed they are the sonic equivalent of watching landscapes through a car's windshield. Leila Josefowicz handles the violin part of the title track with characteristic aplomb, providing particularly expressive playing in the "Meditative" section. "American Berserk", another latter-day composition on the album, is a frenetic romp that edges perilously close to spinning out of control at several points but pulls itself together in the nick of time.

The John Adams Earbox
1999

картинка, оставленная пользователем

It is a ten-CD retrospective of almost all of Adams’s music written since the late 1970’s. In 1985 Adams began a long-term exclusive relationship with Nonesuch Records which has resulted in one of the most thoroughly documented catalogues of any living composer. Many of the recordings are conducted by the composer himself, and all have been created under his supervision.
