Цитата:
The Dismemberment Plan may be associated with the DC punk and emo-core scenes, but with their layered keyboards (three-quarters of the members contribute) they are never what you expect. The uninitiated might take exception to singer Travis Morrison's voice, but his nerdy charm, lyrics, and falsetto tend to take hold, as legions of devoted fans will attest. Some might wish DP would remake 1999's Emergency and I; instead, they enlisted Emergency's knob-twiddler, J. Robbins (Jawbox) and expanded their songwriting. Tons of vibrant noise is thrown down and the rhythm section deserves particular kudos. In many ways DP are more jazz than rock at this point. But the sonic spectrum is so wide that the songs never sound crowded. Continuing the tradition of peppering puzzle-like structures with disparate influences (hip-hop, funk, punk, new wave), Change--though thoroughly modern--evokes some good bits from the '80s. There's a bit of the Police (drumming by Joe Easley), U2 (Edge-like rattle and treble-kick guitar), and Talking Heads (quirky, African-sounding rhythms), but it's all mixed with a buzzing excitement, an electricity that hasn't burned out but increased in voltage.

These are two amazing, classic underground cds. I was very surprised to see that they weren't here already. Enjoy.

If anyone has anything else, especially "...Is Terrified" or "!", feel free to upload them.
WoW this is a great band !!!

Цитата:
This split EP is perhaps best suited for those already familiar with the excellent rock stylings of both Juno and the Dismemberment Plan, both bands that are difficult to categorize (that's a compliment) and aren't immediately accessible, especially on this CD. It opens with "The Dismemberment Plan Gets Rich," a bizarre and funny fantasy about the band's imagined exploits in world domination (sample lyric: "Joe got caught on board a boat with seven tons of opium in a Singapore harbor -- color us embarrassed!") flavored with bells and whistles, literally. The Dismemberment Plan switches gears completely with a six-minute version of Jennifer Paige's bubblegum dancefloor hit "Crush," turning it into a slow-burn indie jam. Juno also makes an odd choice of a cover version, DJ Shadow's "High Noon," turning a song built largely around samples into one performed by a standard rock lineup to amazing effect.

Цитата:
Washington, D.C.'s the Dismemberment Plan have always felt like a band in constant evolution. !, their first album, was a scatterbrained post-punk freak-out with brilliant moments of melody peeking through; their follow-up, The Dismemberment Plan Is Terrified, refined that melody and blended it seamlessly with their angular catharsis. Their third release, Emergency & I, saw the Plan infuse their music with the disparate funk and soul undercurrents that always bubbled just below the surface, and they garnered widespread critical and commercial praise on an underground scale. It's only fitting, then, for the Dismemberment Plan to pull an about face and refocus their musical spasms and manic energy toward quiet introspection and even deeper soul on their fourth record. The aptly titled Change showcases a band testing themselves by going down an untravelled road while still maintaining their identity. Singer/guitarist/keyboardist Travis Morrison has called it a "night album," and with its somber guitars and pulsing keyboards, it's tailor-made for long, lonely walks under orange streetlights or melancholy evenings spent stargazing from a bedroom. Indeed, heartbreak and loss recur as themes throughout, from the plaintive, ambient "Automatic" to the apocalyptic depression of "Time Bomb." Travis Morrison's lyrics, consistently the best and most innovative in modern rock, plumb the depths of his own experience to embody the emotional cuts and bruises that everyone has felt. In "Come Home," Morrison copes with a breakup by begging his lover to "Come home/I cannot remember why you left/And I'd rather be happy than right this time." Alternately, in "Time Bomb," he vows revenge, claiming, "I am a time bomb and I lay forgotten at the bottom of your heart/I'm fine/Ticking away the years/'Til I blow your world apart," but he allows us to glimpse the pain beneath the anger with the final lyric, "I am a lost soul, and I send out a sickened light for anyone to see, a cry for help." At his best, Morrison achieves a brilliant sort of meta-poetry within the modern constraints of a rock song, and each track bristles with too many lyrical golden nuggets to mention. Instrumentally, the Plan has never been stronger; Morrison and Jason Caddell's guitars snarl and tremble on the paranoia-fueled "Secret Curse," and bassist Eric Axelson can morph to any shade between a rubbery, loping bounce and a tight, aggressive bite. Drummer Joe Easley skitters and bops throughout, and his live drum-and-bass performance on "The Other Side" is a rhythmic marvel. The group employs keyboards in dynamic ways that other bands can only hope to aspire to; part of this dynamism and variation likely stems from the band's rotating keyboard duties (Axelson, Morrison, and Caddell all take turns). They give the funky, springy "Ellen and Ben" extra kick with blips and squiggles that recall vintage video games, and the beautiful "Superpowers" is built around a soft, trilling keyboard riff. It's difficult to chart the Dismemberment Plan's next move; their boundless creativity is their only fence. They could turn down an entirely new musical path, or they could always revisit their equally brilliant old territory. Either way, listeners are in for an original musical experience.

Цитата:
The band's third full album is a firecracker, showing their at once passionate and sly approach to music -- take in everything, put it back out, and give it its own particular sheen and spin -- is in no danger of letting up. Knowing fans of the quartet have spoken on how it's clear that the bandmembers listen to everything from old soul to hip-hop and techno and back again, and there's no argument here based on the evidence of this disc. Travis Morrison's unusual vocals make a brilliant calling card for the band, high, a touch quavery, but never out of control, slipping into the mix like another instrument. Though the comparisons to fellow D.C. musical figure Craig Wedren are understandable, Morrison's voice isn't as piercing, with a warm, light undertow that's quite affecting. When he hits his best moments, like the downright anthemic but never breast-beating "What Do You Want Me to Say?," it's a wonder more people aren't talking about the guy. The rest of the band turn the indie rock stereotype on its head, avoiding aimless shambling jangle or emo's straightjacketing stereotype in favor of an unsettled mix that embraces sampling's jump-cut techniques and shifting rhythms where prominence is equally given to guitar, keyboards, and beat. It can be late-night jazzy mood-out or sudden thrash, but the quartet handles all approaches with aplomb and creative arrangements to boot. Drummer Joe Easley may be the band's secret weapon, able to keep the pace and swing just enough, though bassist Eric Axelson is by no means a slouch himself -- the dub-touched "Spider in the Snow" is a great showcase for both. The fact that "You Are Invited" is conceivably the world's greatest synth-pop/electro/guitar chime/post-punk song about trying to get to the right party -- and is emotional without being overwrought -- gives a sense as to this album's considerable strengths

It's one of the punchier titles around, and happily the Dismemberment Plan live up to it on their full debut album. Carrying over a new version of "Wouldn't You Like to Know" (a track from "Can We Be Mature?," their first single), the Plan -- here with original drummer Steve Cummings -- are a fairly thrash-crazed example of what the term "emo" used to mean. There aren't any apologetic weepouts, just calmer moments amidst pretty explosive performances. The group's debt to the Cure, whom they had covered on the Give Me the Cure benefit/tribute CD, actually surfaces in the more openly tuneful passages -- it's more pop Cure than the angst-y version though, since the young band's own screaming frustration derives from other sources. There are hometown faves like the Rites of Spring, naturally, but one can also catch the intensity of Drive Like Jehu, if slightly smoothed out and made more accessible. Compared to the group's later, more open embrace of different rhythmic approaches and influences, here it's a touch more straightforward -- Cummings by now means a bad drummer, just not as totally impressive and fluid as Joe Easley. Travis Morrison casts around for a variety of vocal guises rather than settling on one, sometimes chatty and relaxed, other times amping up the screams, and at still other times trying for a bit of soul/lounge shtick. It's an odd combination, but still has a certain something, while the overall combination on such winners as "OK Jokes Over," an analysis of a shredded relationship with a great high-speed rush in the music, is pure delight. For all that the quartet is still a straight-up rock band, there's plenty of hints of their future subtlety and sonic joy -- the chimes and handclaps in "Soon to Be Ex Quaker," the stuttering stop-start rumble of "13th and Euclid."

A four-piece outfit brandishing erratic musical directions, punk-rock energy and experimental songwriting may not sound like major-label material, but sure enough, based upon the strength of ...Is Terrified, the Dismemberment Plan were scooped up by biggie Interscope Records. The group's sophomore outing is not as neatly reigned in as its predecessor !, but pleasures abound: "That's When the Party Started," with a cool synth-pop sheen, sounds like an aggro Talking Heads, while the monologue that drives "The Ice of Boston" demonstrates singer Travis Morrison's lyrical chops.
