The collaboration of the poet Anne-James Chaton, guitarist Andy Moor and musician Alva Noto is a dense and structured sound design, in which words, rhythms, and melodic loops inexorably blend. Anne-James Chaton reads almost a litany of portraits of people, built from lists of events and objective facts. The list is set in several languages, deliberately repetitive, and becomes a continuous bass line on which the music builds up. The electronic sound structures of Alva Noto perfectly complement the incursions of Andy Moor‘s experimental guitar playing. Gradually, the prose, the guitar and machines resonate, culminating in a powerful storm both musical and harmonious.
The text consists of a collection of twenty portraits written throughout the last decade. These almost photographic sketches are fed from textual blueprints which met the author at some point in time: bank statements, subway tickets, restaurant and shopping receipts are rewritten in prose, composed in simple subject-verb-complements. Each piece of information becomes a sentence; all sentences are short and compact, and in fast succession, they gradually shape a story. Portraits of a nurse, a teacher, an educator, a singer, an astronaut, and many others are placed end to end. The assembly of parallel lives creates a continuous thread, providing a path to follow both extreme banality and great adventures. Actions, places and events are melted in the instance of a third person singular with no indication which is its true identity. It is a disturbance with many possible escape routes of dispersion and emergence.
The listener encounters the speeches of German, English, Japanese and other languages which introduce multiple shifts of meaning. The voice becomes pure sensation; in conjoint with the textures and improvisations delivered by the other musicians, it can submerge to the background and re-emerge again, being pure sonic material stripped off of its communicative function. The significance of words is lost in pure performance and proceeds as yet another texture in the sound.

French sound-poet Anne-James Chaton will release a surprise album with long time collaborator and guitar player Andy Moor next month.

Entitled Transfer, the new album essentially collates the series of 7″ releases of the same name that Anne-James Chaton and Andy Moor have been releasing together since 2011. A conceptual emphasis on transition and transportation runs through each of the two-track EPs, with Chaton explaining to Juno Plus in May last year, “Each 7” works with a different kind of transportation, such as cars, rail or air travel. The idea is that the A-Side’s text is built with concrete materials and the B-Side’s text is made with fictional materials, such as literature, film or art.”

The album combines all eight tracks from the preceding 7”s, with two new additions in “Journal D’un Naufrage” and “Journey On The Pequod”. Transfer is the first album from the Frenchman since he appeared on Raster-Noton last year with Décade, which saw Chaton and Andy Moor team up with Alva Noto for an abstracted cohesion of far-out electronics pitched against experimental guitars and morose sound poetics. As part of the Guitar Poetry tour, Anne-James Chaton and Andy Moor will play London’s Cafe Oto on June 2, supported by fellow French poet Jean-Michel Espitallier and guitarist Olivier Mellano – more information on that can be found here.

Like the 7” series before it, Transfer will see a release through Dutch imprint Unsounds tomorrow.

TRANSFER is a collection of poetry guitar music pieces originally released as a series of four seven inch singles based around the themes of transportation and transition; side A constructed from real or factual information and material, side B from fiction and fantasy. Themes were taken more or less directly from news items or literature and film history, from Jules Verne’s “Around the World in 80 Days”, the death of princess Diana and Grace Kelly, major plane crashes throughout history, Leonardo da Vinci’s musings on aerodynamics, to Agatha Christies “Murder on the Orient Express”.
Andy Moor and Anne-James Chaton first began performing together in 2004 when Chaton joined the Ex onstage to perform one of their songs. They later started to collaborate as a duo, building the music and text for one of Chaton’s portrait series; the journalist which later resulted in their first CD “Le Journaliste”, also released with Unsounds. Since then Moor and Chaton have toured widely in Europe, Canada and Japan, always building, reconstructing and adjusting their set and performance using improvisation as a creative source. In more recent months they have included video projections to the performances. They combine guitar riffs and loops, abstract noise, live sampling, dark beats and the unmistakable voice of Chaton, very present and rhythmic.
I've been looking for it everywhere, without success.
