Hans-Peter Lindstrom isn't all that sure about
the record he's just made. "I think this album
might be hard for my label," he demurred in a
recent interview. "I think I've gone further out
than before, but I'm not sure if it's for the

It's an alarmingly frank confession from a man
whose last solo releases first track ran to a
whopping 29 minutes in length. But, to be fair,
the Norwegian producers been a sound judge of
quality over the course of a decade-long career
that began almost by accident.

Lindstrom was a rock fan before turning his hand
to electronic music in the early-00s, scoring a
string of successes with remixes for the likes
of Franz Ferdinand and LCD Soundsystem. Later,
his self-penned productions suggested a crisply
modern take on the synth futurism of Vangelis
and Giorgio Moroder, plus the space disco sound
of 1970s DJs like Daniele Baldelli.

The Oslo-born musician enjoyed further acclaim
for his releases with fellow producer Prins
Thomas, but his most accessible work to date
came with Real Life Is No Cool. Said 2010 set
collected tracks made with singer Christabelle,
who added pop jouissance to his panoramic
musical vision; it's since become something of a
cult classic.

As the title would suggest, Six Cups of Rebel
puts him back in weirder territory, albeit of a
slightly differing stripe it's a record defined
by creeping anxiety and frustration, as evinced
by the stuck church-organ drone of opener No
Release, which is beat-free and leads you to
wonder what kind of grand architectural folly
Lindstrom has in mind here.
De Javu provides some reassurance with its
robo-George Clinton riffing and artfully
pitch-shifted, choppy house accents. But, again,
there's a darkly introspective feel at work
that's bolstered by an anguished, "can't get no
release" refrain that makes its entrance around
the five-minute mark. Magik is notable for some
eccentric vocals (a hallmark of the record),
before evil synths start flashing like
searchlights on a penitentiary compound. Then
the prog-tinged Quiet Place to Live lurches in
like a bout of cosmic seasickness, a wracked
voice declaring that "all I want is a quiet
place to live" over a spooked-sounding beat.
Call Me Anytime sounds queasier still; all
sozzled synthetic birdsong and freakshow sounds
that settle into a skittering house groove. But
Six Cups gets truly out-there with the
title-track's unappealing blend of acid squelch
and On the Corner-era jazz-funk, and the
10-minute Hina, which is bookended by a pair of
drum solos and sounds like a purgatorial
inversion of The Field's sublime tension.
Points for trying something new, but it's hard
to disagree with Lindstroms own assessment of
the record as something of an experimental

In a world in which trance DJs with names like Ferry, Armin and Tiësto plead for votes in the DJmag Top 100, it’s nice to know there are other, stranger, galaxies circling the more secular and mundane one in which we live. One such universe, Planet Idjut, is occupied by two otherwise unemployable characters called Daniel (Tyler) and Conrad (McConnell). It circles the other planets suspiciously, unwilling (or perhaps more pertinently, unable) to conform to the mores and habits of other mere mortals.

They are, it is true, DJs just like the aforementioned Tiësto and company, but where most are happy to serve up a formulaic and entirely predictable menu to keep the happy E hordes of Ibiza content, the Idjut Boys play, as Conrad once quipped, “Whatever we can get away with.” That could include anything from 70s jock metallists Nazareth to Phil Collins interspersed with perhaps some Underground Resistance for light relief, swiftly followed by the Temptations, something which makes their DJ sets non-conformist, occasionally brilliant, sometimes floor-clearing, but always interesting.

Amazingly, despite a 20-year career they have never produced an artist album. Until now. Those expecting formulaic disco-not-disco floor-screamers will be disappointed. Many months in the making, many collaborators in its gestation, this is what the Idjut Boys sound like strapped to an Eames chair, cheroot in hand, while their pet tiger Keith sits by the hearth fire. “What we’ve tried to do is make an LP, four tracks a side on vinyl,” reports Conrad. “You stick it on your stereo, have a cup of coffee and read the paper. When it’s finished you stick the other side on. So we’ve made an LP in the traditional way.”

Although the album was made with the armchair rather than the podium in mind, their approach to music-making as not altered at all. Although neither plays an instrument, they use the mixing board as their Stratocaster or Rhodes, often adding effects live as the song plays. “We do lots and lots of versions and mixes,” says Conrad. “Then we edit stuff from one into another. We try and use as many different sound sources and lots of different musicians. We’ve tried to make this sound as good as possible, so we’ve gone all over the place recording things, like Oslo for Bugge Wesseltoft’s piano, our friend Andy Hopkins’ for the drums and guitar and writing with Sally and Steve from A Man Called Adam in Cornwall.”

If this gives you the impression the duo have settled down, bought themselves knitted Arran sweaters, flutes and a subscription to Wallpaper*, you’d be wrong. Although the Idjuts are keen for the album to be a listening experience, they are already champing at the bit to start making dance versions (a “drum and bassy dub” of ‘Going Down’ is already in the can). “Hopefully enough of them will buy the LP and think, “Yeah I don’t mind wasting some more money on you fucking idiots.”” Or Idjuts, as the case may be. (Bill Brewster)

Mungolian Jetset's Pal Nyhus, aka DJ Strangefruit, is one of the unsung
heroes of Norwegian electronic music. While nowhere near as celebrated as
compatriots Hans-Peter Lindstrom, Prins Thomas and "Todd" Terje Olsen, he's
been the glue that holds the Oslo disco scene together for the best part of
a decade. His project with studio don Knut Saevik is consistently excellent
- and fittingly, their new offering Mungoldelics starts with a bang. Opener
"Toccato" starts off sounding like a cosmic disco take on Steve Reich's
Music For 18 Musicians, before morphing into a thrillingly Scandolearic
fusion of spine tingling marimba melodies and trippy, darkroom electronics.
There's much more to explore here - a string of collaborations (Balearic
types Athana, Norwegian pop singer Unni and electronica/jazz fusionists
Jaga Jazzist all feature), a handful of strange new pseudonyms (Knights of
Jumungus anyone?) and the occasional original production. It's pretty much
a brand new Mungolian Jetset album and doesn't sound like anything else.

Back in the days of Kling Klang and Telescope Mind, San Francisco punk-dance power source Tussle got down to the bare bones and nitty gritty of primal house. As if struck by an epiphany telling them that a myriad of effects lies beyond their basement-jam bass and drum formula, Tempest takes their sound out of a two dimensional clench. While their bass scales and drums thumped with caveman command remain, the assistance of JD Twitch means freestyled and improvised meetings with pedals and knobs warms to a scuzzy, post-Cream Cuts psychedelica.

Tussle’s appeal through a scorn for sound levels and keeping inside the lines, now has “Moondog” and “Yellow Lighter” seeing brightness and opportunities. It’s still raw and funky, stubborn and chisel-cheeked, but better rounded, and that’s not to say they’ve become all musician either. They’re trying new things out, letting instinct guide them and making things fit. “Cat Pirate” fills the sound bed with as much old skool computer hardware as it can handle as if holding up a thrift store — the beat goes on while Tussle ask what does this button do, and what happens when they slide this lever. “P44″ is DIY disco with a siphon of funk confusion, like rock stars snorting moondust, and “Eye Context” is the punk-funk getting harder and slicker. A change for the better, all while still shaggily throwing instruments around.
