Inside the Birth of the Velvet Underground

Read an exclusive excerpt from a new biography, 'Lou Reed: A Life,' about how an unlikely group of musicians formed one of rock's most important bands

The Velvet Underground will continue to celebrate their 50th anniversary into 2018 with a limited edition vinyl box set that collects four of the iconic rock band's studio albums along with a reconstruction of their "lost" 1969 LP.

The six-album 50th anniversary box set also includes 1967's The Velvet Underground & Nico, 1968's White Light/White Heat, 1969's The Velvet Underground, 1970's Loaded and Nico's solo debut Chelsea Girl, which featured contributions from Velvet Underground's Lou Reed, John Cale and Sterling Morrison.

The box set, due out February 23rd and limited to 1,000 copies, also has an exclusive 48-page booklet with vintage photographs and a new foreword penned by Velvet Underground drummer Maureen Tucker. All six albums are pressed onto 180-gram vinyl and presented in stereo.

While the tracks on the 1969 LP previously featured on outtakes collections like VU and Another View, the 50th anniversary edition of 1969 marks the first time the album has been "recreated" for vinyl release. The double-LP 1969 is fleshed out with demo recordings from 1968. The box set is available to preorder now.

In October, the surviving founding members of Velvet Underground, John Cale and Mo Tucker, reunited to perform "I'm Waiting for the Man" for a Grammy salute.

Velvet Underground Exhibit Opening in New York City

“The Velvet Underground Experience,” a multimedia exhibition about the history and influence of the Velvet Underground will run in New York City October 10th through December 30th, The New York Times reports. The exhibition debuted in Paris two years ago and features rare photographs, portraits, films, videos, live concerts and musical workshops. The show will be housed at 718 Broadway in Manhattan.

According to the exhibition’s website, “The Velvet Underground Experience” will be divided into six sections. The show will examine post-World War II America and the rise of the Beat Generation, the fortuitous meeting of Lou Reed and John Cale, the New York art scene of the Sixties, the Velvet Underground’s years in Andy Warhol’s Factory and the band’s continued evolution following the release of their seminal debut, The Velvet Underground and Nico. The New York iteration of the exhibit will also feature a new section tracking the Velvet Underground’s vast influence on modern American art and music.

“I’m very proud to be able to able to show New Yorkers that the band has such a big influence everywhere else: not only in America, but in Europe, in Japan, in South America,” said the exhibition’s main curator, Christian Fevret. “It’s giving back to New York what New York gave us.”

Tickets for “The Velvet Underground Experience” go on sale August 17th at 10 a.m. ET. A pre-sale for Citi cardmembers starts August 14th.

John Cale’s Velvet Underground Talk: 10 Things We Learned

More than half a century ago, the Velvet Underground formed in downtown Manhattan and five decades later, the group has given their blessing to a new exhibition devoted to their legacy. The Velvet Underground Experience opened in Greenwich Village this week — a quick walk from where they first formed — and to mark the occasion, violist and co-founder John Cale participated in a talk at the exhibit.

The Q&A took place in the exhibit’s Bandisintown Studio, located in the bulding’s sub-basement, making for a truly underground happening in front of a small audience. The exhibition itself features photos, video and memorabilia not just related to the band but to the “other” New York that was going on in the Sixties: Andy Warhol’s art, Jonas Mekas’ film exhibitions, the underground press, etc. Its goal is not just to tell the story of the Velvet Underground – which it does with rare pictures of the band’s early gigs and insights into their entourage, like Edie Sedgwick – but to provide context for a period in New York’s history that changed the art world.

It’s a legacy that Cale, dressed entirely in dark colors, was humble about in conversation, when the event’s moderator kept pressing him on their importance and comparing them to Led Zeppelin. Despite his humility, Cale shared many tidbits about how the Velvet Underground operated, their relationship with Andy Warhol and his own solo career. Here are 10 things we learned from the talk.
